The New Eldercare Service Model Must Be One Of Inclusion
Chapter Health Disparities in America The new eldercare service model must be one of inclusion. We can no longer afford to marginalize any group of seniors. ââ¬âAuthor Introduction I n the United States, wealth is the strongest determinant of health; and the strength of this relationship is profound and continues to increase. Wealth confers many benefits that are associated with health and quality of life outcomes. Wealth creates disparities in high quality education, employment, housing, childcare, nutrition, leisure activities, access to quality medical care, and safer and cleaner neighborhoods. Economic studies, the national press, and forward thinking political leaders are reporting on the major wealth disparities that already existâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Affordable Care Act is moving us in the right direction, but the social inequities and discrimination remain the same. We canââ¬â¢t purport to have a national goal to ââ¬Å"eliminate health disparitiesâ⬠and continue to accept the social inequities that come from such a major gap in wealth. If we hope to solve the pressing issues of eldercare, these inequities must be addressed head on now and in the future. Otherwise, those who are caregivers now may not have access to the care they will need in the future. Defining Health Disparity The United States Department of Health has an overarching goal ââ¬Å"to eliminate health disparities.â⬠This term has no absolute definition. It is most often defined as ââ¬Å"health differences that occur by gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, living in rural localities, or sexual orientation,â⬠or ââ¬Å"population specific difference in the presence of disease, health outcomes, or access to care.â⬠Many factors cause health disparities. Older adults face challenges in one or all of these disparities. Depending on their living conditions and life-time health problems, they may be in double or triple jeopardy, increasing their risk for serious illness and need for eldercare. Defining Health Care Disparities The Institute of Medicine (IOM) defines health care disparities as the ââ¬Å"difference in the quality of care received by minorities and non-minorities who have equal access to care.â⬠Health care disparities can be affected by how

America And Gender Neutral Bathrooms Essay - 1660 Words
America and Gender Neutral Bathrooms Gender equality is a pressing issue in the United States. The definition of gender, and the rights that accompany them, is constantly being updated and adjusted. The LBGT community is fighting for equality after being repressed for many years. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether a certain law or right for LBGT people is to be initiated. In many instances, these issues dominate the media, and cause for chaos on both sides of the spectrum. The bathroom controversy exemplifies this. The LBGT community argues that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please. The U.S. federal government is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in The Washington Post, writes, ââ¬Å"The federal government is strongly urging employers to give transgender employees access to bat hrooms that correspond to their gender identity, marking a new policy front in the fast-moving campaign for transgender equalityâ⬠(Rein). Rein argues that bathrooms need to be made neutral, as it discriminates members of the LBGT community. Essentially, she argues throughout her article that emotional issues are the biggest reason to allow this. The hotel management would need analyze and implement some of the following changes: â⬠¢ Encourage trips to their other properties ââ¬â (cross promotions across all hotels) â⬠¢ Incentives to property owners and guests when they try a new Rosewood hotel. Preserve the uniqueness of each property while still promoting the Rosewood brand/name â⬠¢ Invite artists, designers and architects to visit and aid in the renovation of the properties (in order to keep decor, while incorporating brand) â⬠¢ Develop a metric to measure quality of service and customer satisfaction and implement it across the border in all properties â⬠¢ Develop and successfully use a database of customers (both national and international) which will allow the collecting of data easier and will be beneficial when presenting offers to different customers. However, each property should be enhanced and upgraded individually in order to retain its originality. â⬠¢ Flexible check-in and check-out â⬠¢ Loyalty programs With all of this being said and analyzed, management could make a compelling case about why it would be a good idea to rebrand the hotel. It would be easy to compel and convey the message that by rebranding the hotels, the Rosewood brand will be recognized and respected as the consummate and top operator of ultra-luxury hotels in some of the most desirable locations in the world. It would also be conveyed that Rosewood hotels deliver exceptional service to the guest, as all employees are willing to go the extra mile. It is important in any customer oriented business to foster a work environment that provides the employees a sense of belonging and personal pride through the accomplishment of the job duties while maintaining a balance between work and personal life. Lastly, it is imperative to analyze and understand how the rebranding will affect the market in terms of their competitors. Will the competitors (Ultra Luxury Hotels) design a ââ¬Å"counter attackâ⬠to the rebranding strategy? Will this rebranding of hotels as ââ¬Å"Rosewood luxuryâ⬠saturate the already crowded field of operators? 3. What would be the implications if the retention rate with corporate branding increased only 10% of the average guest retention rate reported in the case? Would it change your decision? Letââ¬â¢s look at the overall financial picture of the consequences of the retention rate being only 10% above the average guest retention. However, if you consider that the company will need to invest $1,000,000 yearly in additional expenses, the loss is astronomical. The decision to pursue corporate branding would need to be re-evaluated as it would cost the company 9M in additional expenses (advertising alone), while the return would only be 8. 6M On the other hand, the decision to pursue corporate branding is appropriate if the retention rate can be expected at or above 21. 6%; anything lower than that, the profits will dwindle down and the overall strategy would need to be re-evaluated. In summary, a retention rate which produces less than the needed expenses should not be considered as there is not return on the investment. Nonetheless, if it can be proven, that this small increase in retention is then set to increase after a small period of time, then a different kind of analysis would be needed to explore said strategy.

An Introduction to Medical Anthropology
An Introduction to Medical Anthropology Medical anthropology is a field of anthropology focusedà on the relationship between health, illness, and culture. Beliefs and practices about health vary across different cultures and are influenced by social, religious, political, historical, and economic factors. Medical anthropologists use anthropological theories and methods to generate unique insights into how different cultural groups around the world experience, interpret, and respond to questions of health, illness, and wellness. Medical anthropologists study a wide array of topics. Specific questions include: How does a particular culture define health or illness? How might a diagnosis or condition be interpreted by different cultures? What are the roles of doctors, shamans, or alternative health practitioners? Why do certain groups experience better or worse health outcomes, or higher prevalence of certain diseases? What is the connect between health, happiness, and stress? How are different conditions stigmatized or even celebrated in specific cultural contexts? In addition, medical anthropologists study the factors that affect or are affected by the distribution of illness, and are also closely attuned to questions of inequality, power, and health. History of the Field Medical anthropology emerged as a formal area of study in the mid-20thà century. Its roots are in cultural anthropology, and it extends that subfieldââ¬â¢s focus on social and cultural worlds to topics relating specifically to health, illness, and wellness. Like cultural anthropologists, medical anthropologists typically use ethnography ââ¬â or ethnographic methods ââ¬â to conduct research and gather data. Ethnography is a qualitative research method that involves full immersion in the community being studied. The ethnographer (i.e., the anthropologist) lives, works, and observes daily life in this distinctive cultural space, which is called the field site. Medical anthropology grew increasingly important after World War II, when anthropologists began to formalize the process of applying ethnographic methods and theories to questions of health around the world. This was a time of widespread international development and humanitarian efforts aimed at bringing modern technologies and resources to countries in the global South. Anthropologists proved particularly useful for health-based initiatives, using their unique skills of cultural analysis to help develop programs tailored to local practices and belief systems. Specific campaigns focused on sanitation, infectious disease control, and nutrition. Key Concepts and Methods Medical anthropologyââ¬â¢s approach to ethnography has changed since the fieldââ¬â¢s early days, thanks in large part to the growth of globalization and the emergence of new communication technologies. While the popular image of anthropologists involves living in remote villages in far-off lands, contemporary anthropologists conduct research in a variety of field sites ranging from urban centers to rural hamlets, and even in social media communities. Some also incorporate quantitative data into their ethnographic work. Some anthropologists now design multi-sited studies, for which they conduct ethnographic fieldwork in different field sites. These might include comparative studies of health care in rural versus urban spaces in the same country, or combine traditional in-person fieldwork living in a particular place with digital research of social media communities. Some anthropologists even work in multiple countries around the world for a single project. Together, these new possibilities for fieldwork and field sites have broadened the scope of anthropological research, enabling scholars to better study life in a globalized world. Medical anthropologists use their evolving methodologies to examine key concepts, including: Health disparities: the differences in the distribution of health outcomes or disease prevalence across groupsGlobal health: the study of health across the globeEthnomedicine:à the comparative study of traditional medicine practices in different culturesCultural relativism:à the theory that all cultures must be considered on their own terms, not as superior or inferior to others. What Do Medical Anthropologists Study? Medical anthropologists work to solve a variety of problems. For instance, some researchers focus on health equity and health disparities, trying to explain why certain communities have better or worse health outcomes than others. Others might ask how a particular health condition, such as Alzheimerââ¬â¢s or schizophrenia, is experienced in localized contexts around the globe. Medical anthropologists can be divided into two general groups: academic and applied. Academic medical anthropologists work within university systems, specializingà in research, writing, and/or teaching. In contrast, applied medical anthropologists often work outside of university settings. They can be found in hospitals, medical schools, public health programs, and in nonprofit or international non-governmental organizations. While academic anthropologists often have more open-ended research agendas, applied practitioners are typically part of a team trying to solve or generate insights into a specific problem or question. Today, key research areas includeà medical technologies, genetics and genomics, bioethics, disability studies, health tourism, gender-based violence, infectious diseaseà outbreaks, substance abuse, and more. Ethical Considerations Both academic and applied anthropologists face similar ethical considerations, which are typically overseen by their universities, funders, or other governing organizations. Institutional review boards were established in the U.S. in the 1970s to ensure ethical compliance for research involving human subjects, which includes most ethnographic projects. Key ethical considerations for medical anthropologists are: Informed consent:à ensuring that research subjects are aware of any risks and consent to participate in the study.Privacy: protecting participants health status, image or likeness, and private informationà Confidentiality:à protecting the anonymity (if desired) of a research subject, often by using pseudonymous names for participants and field site locations Medical Anthropology Today The most well-known anthropologist today is Paul Farmer. A physician and an anthropologist, Dr. Farmer teaches at Harvard University and has received widespread acclaim for his work in global health. Other key figures in medical anthropology include Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Arthur Kleinman, Margaret Lock, Byron Good, and Rayna Rapp. The Society for Medical Anthropology is the primary professional organization for medical anthropologists in North America, and is affiliated with the American Anthropological Association. There are scholarly journals devoted solely to medical anthropology, such as Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Medical Anthropology, and the online journalà Medicine Anthropology Theory.à Somatosphere.netà is a popular blog focusing on medical anthropology and related disciplines.à à Medical Anthropology Key Takeaways Medical anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the relationship between health, illness, and culture.Medical anthropologists can be divided into two key fields: applied and academic. While medical anthropologists study a wide range of issues and topics, key concepts include health disparities, global health, medical technologies, and bioethics. Prepositions with Enamored
Prepositions with Enamored Prepositions with Enamored Prepositions with Enamored By Maeve Maddox A reader is troubled by the use of enamored by instead of enamored of. (British enamoured). It may be because I read a lot of British literature, but the only usage with enamored that sounds ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠to me is ââ¬Å"enamored of,â⬠as in Titaniaââ¬â¢s remark when waking from the spell in A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream: ââ¬Å"Me thought I was enamoured of an Asse.â⬠However, another preposition is acceptable with enamored, but itââ¬â¢s not by; itââ¬â¢s with. Merriam-Webster gives these examples: tourists were enamored of the town a beautiful Indian girl with whom he was enamoredWalter Havighurst The verb enamor may be used transitively, as in ââ¬Å"Rosamond Vincy enamored Dr. Lydgate.â⬠That means that she affected him in such a way as to make him fall in love with her. More usually, enamor is cast in the passive: ââ¬Å"Dr. Lydgate was enamored of Rosamond Vincy.â⬠Here, the meaning is that he was inflamed with love for her. Paul Brians, an English professor at Washington State University offers this helpful mnemonic: If youââ¬â¢re crazy about ferrets, youââ¬â¢re enamored of them. It is less common but still acceptable to say ââ¬Å"enamored withâ⬠; but if you say you are enamored by ferrets, youââ¬â¢re saying that ferrets are crazy about you. Iââ¬â¢ll offer my own view as to how one might choose between of and with to use with this verb: Use ââ¬Å"enamored ofâ⬠when speaking of romantic love: ââ¬Å"Marc Antony was enamored of Cleopatra.â⬠Use ââ¬Å"enamored withâ⬠when speaking of mere fascination or interest: ââ¬Å"Charlie is enamored with his new iPad.â⬠As for ââ¬Å"enamored by,â⬠remember the ferrets.
